Blucarat is dedicated to the truism that no one wants to be alone- most especially when shopping. Attempts to close the gap between solitary online shopping and social activities abound. Online reviews, F-commerce sites and Instagram curators point to - but don’t solve the underlying need for Social Commerce.
There are a growing number of companies that talk about Social Commerce but we are quite different. Blucarat is not an interactive agency nor a company representing white-label products as our own. Leveraging years of development in the Blucarat Commerce platform, we have developed Blucarat Social, a patent-pending, SaaS-based approach to enable like-minded users to collaboratively shop – and create new purchase paths – through an opt-in “Social Bar” that appears directly on commerce sites.
The Blucarat vision is in response to input from leaders of major Internet retailer sites who shared identical concerns regarding their social marketing efforts. In particular, how difficult it is to gauge the qualitative and quantitative value of social investments. The company formed to address this need and the name Blucarat mirrors that reason for existence. Blue reflects the quality of rich, vast opportunity associated with a clear sky or deep ocean. Carat is the quantitative measurement of the weight and value of a precious gemstone. The fusion of the two as Blucarat represents our unique ability to deliver measurable qualitative and quantitative improvements through Social Commerce.
Blucarat was incubated by MDC Partners, a publicly traded company that utilizes the 50+ companies in its portfolio to drive meaningful returns on marketing and communications investments for over 1,000 companies globally. We are proud to be part of the MDC Partners network and collaborate closely with them on our vision of making Social Commerce a reality. MDC Partners retains a minority interest in Blucarat and follow on investments have come through private technology investors.
Our entire team is proud to be based in New York City’s Union Square where we mix and mingle with both established and start-up companies in Silicon Alley.

Tom C. Kwon, CEO
A seasoned Internet entrepreneur, Tom loves attacking tough problems and creating customer value. Tom’s experience ranges from establishing the White House’s first web presence to connecting every school and library in the state of Connecticut to the Internet, to launching over 700 sites and content management systems (CMS) for Fortune 1000 and Internet Retailer 500 companies. Tom holds a patent for the world’s first multilingual CMS platform as well as a patent for an enterprise SEO optimization appliance. Tom was the finalist for Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2001 and recipient of the “50 Outstanding Asian Americans in Business” Award in 2005. Currently he is a Board member of Business for Diplomatic Action and featured member for Mayor Bloomberg’s Partnership for a New American Economy. Tom attended Northeastern University and completed executive coursework from MIT's Sloan School of Management sponsored by JP Morgan Chase and Marsh McLennan.
David Porzio, EVP Strategy and Business Development
David has created cost efficiencies across corporate enterprises and revenue generating opportunities for global brands around the world. As the EVP of Strategy and Business Development, David is responsible for the company’s overall, operations, technology and solution partner relations. Formerly the Chief of Staff of MDC Partners, David was responsible for leading MDC's investments in Corporate Venture and non-strategic M&A transactions. Prior to joining MDC Partners, David served as Vice President for J. Christopher Capital, a New York-based venture capital firm which focuses on media, fashion and real estate investments. David has a B.A. from Cornell University and a J.D. from the Brooklyn Law School.
Paul Tan, CTO
Lead engineer and full stack developer at the core, Paul loves creating viral and innovative solutions. With over 10 years of experience in software architecture, web development and user interface design, Paul's software deployments are currently used by millions of people across various industries on the Internet. Prior to joining Blucarat, Paul was head of development for dotbox, a pioneer in commerce software platforms. Paul was also the Chief Architect and Lead Developer for Buildinglink, patented building management software that is now the industry standard used by millions of people around the world. Paul has also developed eCommerce and CMS platforms from the ground up for Fortune companies and Internet Retailers around the world. Paul holds a BS in MIS from the Ateneo de Manila University.
Melanie Lopez, VP, Production and Product Development
Melanie brings to Blucarat a strong background in technical web production and products in the luxury and jewelry sectors. Melanie oversees Blucarat’s production and account management teams, using a strong understanding of best practices, process management and eCommerce standards to deliver high-quality, forward-thinking projects within budget and on-time. Melanie's methodical approach to project and product management has led to the successful launches and continued success of Blucarat's luxury eCommerce and social commerce clients, including Harry Winston, Verdura and Laura Geller, as well as the development of Blucarat's social shopping products, Blucarat Commerce and Blucarat Social. Prior to Blucarat Melanie was a senior producer at dotbox, a pioneer in commerce software development. Melanie holds a B.A. from New York University.
